Focus

Birdwatching first, with feeding stations built into every itinerary for photographers

If you have been researching a birding trip to Cali, Colombia, you have probably noticed the same thing I noticed fifteen years ago: the best hotspots of the Western Andes are all within an hour of each other, yet most tours still move you to a different bed every night. That observation is the reason Yotoco Lodge exists. From one birding basecamp in the Western Andes you can bird the Chocó lowlands at dawn, a cloud forest feeder at noon and a dry forest enclave the next morning — and come home to the same room, the same feeders and the same home-cooked dinner every evening.

Below are the three itineraries I run most often from the lodge: a 3-day taster, a 5-day core circuit and the full 8-day Colombia birding holiday package that covers every hotspot in our circuit. They are the exact day plans I use with guests, with real drive times, real start times and the birds we actually go looking for.

Meet "Caleño," Our Beloved Apical Flycatcher

To many, a bird at a feeder is just a beautiful sight. But for us at Yotoco Lodge, "Caleño" is so much more—he is a true friend and a cherished member of our family. Whenever he ventures away for a couple of weeks, I find myself missing him and worrying with the anxious heart of a parent until he safely returns.
For our guests on our 3, 5, or 8-day tours, as well as those joining us for day trips, meeting Caleño leaves a profound and unforgettable impression. He is an incredibly charismatic bird and an absolute showstopper! His friendly nature captivates everyone as he gently accepts worms right from your hand and playfully catches them mid-air with astonishing agility.
Beyond his wonderful personality, our guests absolutely love his name, "Caleño," which perfectly reflects the warm and vibrant spirit of our region. He isn’t just a highlight of the tour; he is an experience that stays in our visitors' hearts forever.

Why plan your itinerary around one basecamp?

Every hotspot in these itineraries is between 20 and 90 minutes from the lodge. That changes the shape of a birding day. Instead of packing, checking out and losing the first hours of daylight on the road, you are on a trail or at a feeder at first light and back for lunch, a shower and an afternoon at our own feeding stations — the only place in the world where the endemic Apical Flycatcher (Myiarchus apicalis) and the Whiskered Wren (Pheugopedius mystacalis) come in reliably.

It also means the itinerary bends to you. Rain at Doña Dora? We swap the day with Atuncela, where the rain shadow keeps things dry. A photographer who wants a second morning at La Florida for the Multicolored Tanager (Chlorochrysa nitidissima)? Twenty minutes away. This flexibility is the practical answer to where to stay for birding near Cali: stay in the middle of the circuit.

3-Day Birding Itinerary: the Western Andes taster

Built for birders passing through Cali with a long weekend, or as a bolt-on to a wider Colombia trip. Two full mornings in the field, both within 45 minutes of the lodge, plus the lodge feeders.

Day 1 — Cali airport pick-up and Yotoco Lodge feeders

Afternoon pick-up at Cali airport and a 90-minute transfer to the lodge. You start birding the moment you arrive: our feeding stations bring in the endemic Apical Flycatcher, endemic Grayish Piculet (Picumnus granadensis), endemic Colombian Chachalaca (Ortalis columbiana), Whiskered Wren, Green Jay, Golden-naped Tanager, Scrub Tanager and Crimson-rumped Toucanet. Dinner and the first checklist session at the lodge.

Day 2 — Finca La Florida (Km 18 area)

A 20-minute drive to the finca made famous by its feeders. The endemic Chestnut Wood-Quail (Odontophorus hyperythrus) visits its own feeder at dawn, and the morning on the trails brings up to 14 hummingbird species and 13 tanagers and allies. Targets: Multicolored Tanager, Saffron-crowned Tanager, Long-tailed Sylph, Booted Racket-tail, Bronzy Inca, Green-and-black Fruiteater, Golden-headed Quetzal, Blue-naped Chlorophonia and Streak-capped Treehunter. Afternoon back at the lodge feeders.

Day 3 — Doña Dora (El Descanso) and airport drop-off

A 45-minute drive up the old Buenaventura road to the upper Anchicayá valley. The morning is dedicated to the Andean Cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola peruvianus) lek and Doña Dora's hummingbird and fruit feeders, where the Toucan Barbet (Semnornis ramphastinus) is the star. Also expect Green Thorntail, Violet-tailed Sylph, Rufous-gaped Hillstar, Rufous-throated Tanager, Silver-throated Tanager and Black-chinned Mountain Tanager. Lunch at the lodge, then the transfer to Cali airport for an evening flight.

Good to know: If you would rather trade Doña Dora for dry forest endemics, Day 3 can run at Atuncela instead. Both are 45 minutes from the lodge.

5-Day Birding Itinerary: the core circuit

My recommendation for most first-time visitors. Five days gets you all four signature habitats — cloud forest, Chocó lowlands, Anchicayá feeders and the Sonso wetland — and a realistic shot at every endemic in the circuit except the Río Bravo specialities.

Day 1 — Cali airport pick-up and Yotoco Lodge feeders

As in the 3-day plan: afternoon transfer, feeders, dinner and checklist.

Day 2 — Finca La Florida

As in the 3-day plan: wood-quail feeder at dawn, hummingbirds and tanagers on the trails, Multicolored Tanager as the headline bird.

Day 3 — San Cipriano birding tour (Chocó lowlands)

Our earliest start: 4:30 am for the 90-minute drive to Córdoba, where we board the brujita — a wooden cart pushed along the railway by a motorcycle, and the only way into San Cipriano. This is an antbird paradise: Black-crowned Antshrike, Checker-throated, Pacific and Dot-winged Antwrens, Chestnut-backed, Stub-tailed, Bicolored and Zeledon's Antbirds and, with luck, the rare Ocellated Antbird (Phaenostictus mcleannani). Chocó specialities include Collared Aracari, Purple-crowned Fairy, Black-breasted Puffbird, Blue-tailed Trogon, Black-tipped Cotinga and Golden-collared Manakin — and we always try for the elusive Sapayoa (Sapayoa aenigma). Back at the lodge around 3:30 pm.

Day 4 — Upper Anchicayá / Doña Dora

Cock-of-the-rock lek, Toucan Barbet and the feeders, as in the 3-day plan. A slower, photography-friendly day after the San Cipriano marathon.

Day 5 — Sonso Lagoon and airport drop-off

An early departure from the lodge to the last extensive natural wetland of the Cauca Valley, a Ramsar site since 2017 and an ancient oxbow of the Cauca River. A completely different bird community to finish on: Anhinga, Cocoi Heron, Bare-faced, Glossy and Buff-necked Ibis, Snail Kite, Limpkin, Blackish Rail, Wattled Jacana, Common Potoo, Vermilion Flycatcher, Pied Water-Tyrant and Fork-tailed Flycatcher — plus the endemic Apical Flycatcher and Grayish Piculet in the dry valley forest. Early lunch at the reserve, then the drive to Cali airport. Plan a departure flight after 5:00 pm.

Swap options: Río Bravo or Atuncela can replace Doña Dora or Sonso depending on your targets. Tell me your wish list when you enquire and I will adjust the days.

8-Day Birding Itinerary: the complete Colombia birding holiday package

Seven nights, eight days, every hotspot in our circuit and every endemic we target: Grayish Piculet, Apical Flycatcher, Multicolored Tanager, Crested Ant-Tanager (Habia cristata), Colombian Chachalaca, Parker's Antbird (Cercomacroides parkeri), Tatamá Tapaculo (Scytalopus alvarezlopezi) and Chestnut Wood-Quail. The pace stays relaxed: every day but one starts and ends at the lodge, and the itinerary balances trail birding with feeding stations so photographers and listers are equally happy.

Day 5 — Atuncela dry forest enclave

A 5:30 am departure for the 45-minute drive to the Atuncela DRMI, a protected area of roughly 5,700 acres where a localised rain shadow has created a pocket of dry forest in the middle of the humid Western Andes. Day 6 — Río Bravo

Out at 4:30 am to be at the Río Bravo Nature Reserve by 6:00 am for roadside birding along the Andean–Pacific transition, where foothill, subtropical and cloud forest species mix on a single stretch of road. This is the day for the hardest endemics: Parker's Antbird, Tatamá Tapaculo and Crested Ant-Tanager, alongside Cloud-forest Pygmy-Owl, Semicollared Hawk, Barred Hawk, Moustached Puffbird, Plain-backed Antpitta, Club-winged Manakin, Scaled Fruiteater, Beautiful Jay, Olive Finch and Purplish-mantled Tanager. Back at the lodge around 3:30 pm.

A 5:30 am departure for SUEE Birding, a new private reserve in the municipality of Yotoco on the eastern slope of the Western Andes, next door to the Yotoco Forest Reserve. Manakins are the theme — Yellow-headed, White-bibbed, Striolated and Golden-collared — with Chestnut-crowned Gnateater, Black Hawk-Eagle, Barred Parakeet, Sharp-tailed Streamcreeper, Long-billed Starthroat and a second chance at Parker's Antbird. In the afternoon we transfer to Hotel La Huerta, which puts us 30 minutes from Sonso for the final morning.

Day 8 — Sonso Lagoon and airport drop-off

Birding the wetland from 5:30 am until 11:00 am, early lunch at the reserve, and the drive to Cali's Alfonso Bonilla Aragón airport. Please book a departure flight after 5:00 pm.

•      Transport: air-conditioned SUVs, with two vehicles linked by two-way radio for groups over three, or a van for groups of four to seven.

•      Accommodation: Yotoco Lodge (all nights) and Hotel La Huerta (Day 7 of the 8-day tour). Private bathrooms, hot water and Starlink Wi-Fi at both.

•      Included: bilingual guide, accommodation, three meals a day from dinner on Day 1 to lunch on the last day, local guides, reserve entrance fees and all land transport.

•      Not included: flights, tips, and extras such as desserts, additional drinks and wine.

Bird photography on these itineraries

Every version has been built with a bird photography tour of the Western Andes in mind, not just a species list. The lodge feeders, La Florida and Doña Dora give you controlled light, perches and repeat visits from the same birds — ideal for the Multicolored Tanager, Toucan Barbet, Apical Flycatcher and up to fourteen hummingbird species. San Cipriano and Río Bravo are trail days where a 400–600 mm lens and high ISO earn their keep; Sonso and Atuncela are open-country days where the light is best before 9:00 am. Tell me at booking if photography is your priority and I will weight the afternoons toward the feeders.
