"Deep Valley" Birdwatching Tour
OVERVIEW Colombia is the undisputed world leader in bird species diversity — and Valle del Cauca stands among its two most bird-rich departments. Of the roughly 2,000 bird species recorded in Colombia, half inhabit the Cauca Valley department. This single province holds more bird species than the entire continental North America and more than all of Europe. With 1,000 recorded species within its borders, Valle del Cauca doesn't just promise a great birding trip — it guarantees exceptional, high-count birding in one of the most extraordinary avian hotspots on the planet. You'll have the chance to see amazing endemic species like Grayish Piculet, Apical Flycatcher, Multicolored Tanager, Crested Ant Tanager, Cauca Guan, Turquoise Dacnis, Colombian Chachalaca, Parker’s Antbird, Tatamá Tapaculo, Chestnut Woodquail, and many other fascinating birds.

At Yotoco Lodge, we offer birding tours ranging from 4 to 15 days, taking you on an extraordinary vertical journey through one of the most biodiverse corridors on the planet. Starting from the steamy Pacific lowlands of the Chocó bioregion at just 200 meters above sea level, rising through the lush forests and coffee-scented slopes of the Western and Central Andes, and sweeping across the agricultural mosaic of the Cauca River Valley, our tours cover an altitudinal range of over 3,000 meters — from 200 to 3,200 meters above sea level — within a single Colombian department.

This dramatic gradient means that in the span of a single tour, your bird list can grow from Chocó endemics and Pacific lowland specialists to high-Andean hummingbirds, tanagers, and páramo birds — ecosystems that on any other continent would require crossing entire countries. Valle del Cauca is that extraordinary.

Thanks to the strategic location of the 3 accommodations we'll use—Yotoco Lodge, Hotel la huerta and Ecohotel el Diamante—we can have different ecosystems and lots of species, while enjoying the comfort of 3 well established base camps, these 3 accommodations provide access to excellent birding routes with remarkable diversity, all within close proximity to the accommodations.
