Meet the species

A living rainbow

At 18–21 cm the Toucan Barbet is a robust, medium-sized bird with a bold, blocky color pattern: a black crown and face, a grayish-blue throat and nape, a brilliant red breast and upper belly, a yellow lower belly, and gray wings and tail. A conspicuous white stripe sits behind a striking red eye, and the heavy yellow bill — dark-tipped, toucan-like — completes the look. Uniquely for such a colorful bird, males and females look nearly identical.

A close cousin of the toucans

The name is more than skin-deep. DNA studies place the Toucan Barbet and its one relative, the Prong-billed Barbet, in their own family (Semnornithidae) as the closest relatives of the true toucans. So that toucan-like bill isn't a coincidence — it reflects a genuine evolutionary link, a lovely detail to share in the field.

Social and vocal

Toucan Barbets are wonderfully social. They live in small family groups that defend a territory together and even raise the chicks communally, with helpers assisting the breeding pair. Their loud, resonant duet — a pair calling back and forth — is one of the characteristic sounds of the western Andean cloud forest. You often hear them before you see them, and they sometimes travel with mixed-species flocks.

An ecological gardener
